Mat Name Meaning

Charwe: Nehanda Charwe Nyakasikana was a spiritual leader or mhondoro, of the Shona people of Mashonaland, now in Zimbabwe. She greatly influenced the Chimurenfa (War of Liberation) to stop the colonization of the British in the late 19th century. She helped organize and direct the resistance of the European assaults. After a valiant fight, the Shona and Ndebele people ran out of supplies and Charwe allowed herself to be captured to avoid further bloodshed. She was sentenced to death by hanging. Before she died she resounded, “My bones will surely rise!” Nehanda Charwe represents nationalist struggle for liberation and is also called Mbuya Charwe, or grandmother of Zimbabwe.
